Coir Fibre
Coir is a versatile natural fibre extracted from mesocarp tissue, or husk of the coconut fruit. Generally fibre is of golden colour when cleaned after removing from coconut husk, and hence the name “The Golden Fibre”. Selected matured coconut husk are used for extraction of fibre using modern machines that ensures the length of fibre will be retained during the process. The extracted fibre will be dried by sunlight or electrical drier made into 150 kg bales by strapping. Our products include super grade, fine grade and first grade fibres.
The two varieties of coir are brown and white. Brown coir harvested from fully ripened coconuts is thick, strong and has high abrasion resistance. It is typically used in upholstery padding, mats, brushes and sacking. White coir fibres harvested from coconuts before they are ripe are white or light brown in colour and are smoother and finer, but also weaker.
They are generally spun to make yarns used in mats or rope. The stiff ,straight and long strands of fibre are termed as Bristle Fibre or Brush Fibre. It is commonly used in brush and broom manufacturing industries. The basic grade of Bristle Fibre is known as 1-Tie fibre. This is then further hackled and classified into 2-tie and 3-tie based on the length of strands.
Applications of Coir Fibre
- Used in potting mixes and as a substrate for hydroponics. Coir fiber improves soil aeration, water retention, and provides a healthy growing environment for plants.
- Used in erosion control mats and blankets to stabilize soil and prevent erosion on slopes and embankments.
- Coir fiber is twisted into ropes and twines, which are durable and resistant to seawater, making them ideal for maritime applications.
- Woven into doormats, floor mats, and carpets. Coir mats are known for their durability and natural aesthetic appeal.
- Coir geotextiles are used in civil engineering projects for soil stabilization, drainage, and preventing soil erosion. They are biodegradable and environmentally friendly alternatives to synthetic geotextiles.
- Used as a natural filler in mattresses, cushions, and upholstery. Coir fiber provides firm support and is breathable, enhancing comfort.
- Used in car seat cushions, upholstery, and interior panels. Coir fiber is lightweight, durable, and provides excellent cushioning.
- Coir fiber is used in eco-friendly building insulation materials. It provides thermal and acoustic insulation, contributing to energy-efficient buildings.
- Combined with other materials to create composite boards and panels for construction.
- Coir fiber is used in making a variety of handicrafts, decorative items, and eco-friendly products such as baskets, planters, and wall hangings.
